On the southwestern coast, the limestone cliffs of Cabo Rojo rise several hundred feet above the Atlantic. The Spanish-style Cabo Rojo Lighthouse, or Faro de Los Morillos, was built in 1881 and is now automated. The bay at Boquerón, part of the municipality, extends several miles inland; salt has been mined in the surrounding flats since the time of the Taíno Indians.
